Multiple Mode Stroop Test

The Multiple Mode Stroop Test is a research-oriented software package designed for controlled investigation of attentional processes using several established variants of the Stroop paradigm. The program supports four experimental formats, allowing researchers to adapt task structure to specific cognitive and experimental goals. The Classic Stroop Test presents colour names with the option to include congruent trials. The Emotional Stroop Test operates with word lists containing emotionally valenced and neutral terms. The Pictorial Stroop Test presents images surrounded by coloured borders with adjustable border width. The Image Pairs task displays two images drawn from different stimulus categories, each framed by a coloured border. Participants are required to select the colour associated with a positive or neutral image, making this task particularly relevant for research into attentional bias and attentional training. A comparable procedure has previously been implemented within the Alcohol Attention-Control Training Programme.

Experimental Control and Configuration

The software provides the experimenter with full control over stimulus content through the use of plain text files and image sets. Experimental parameters such as colour selection, fixation intervals, post-trial pauses, and response modalities can be adjusted according to the requirements of the study. Participant responses may be collected via keyboard, mouse, or touchscreen input. The program supports configurable practice trials with optional feedback to ensure that participants fully understand the task before data collection begins. In the Pictorial Stroop format, both image size and border width can be precisely defined. The Emotional and Pictorial tests allow the use of separate stimulus sets for practice trials, while all task variants include a dedicated training mode to familiarise participants with response methods.

Data Output and Result Files

Upon completion of a test session, the program automatically generates a results file in CSV format. This file contains a complete record of participant responses and reaction times, together with summary statistics such as mean response latency and accuracy rates. The output files can be directly imported into spreadsheet applications or statistical analysis software for further examination and reporting.

Graph Utility for Data Visualisation

An additional graphing utility was introduced in August 2011 to support visual interpretation of experimental results. This utility imports the generated result files and produces graphical representations of response times to emotional and neutral stimuli, along with a calculated distraction index. The graphing tool is included as part of the main software package and may also be used independently if required.

Internet-Enabled Version

In January 2012, an internet-enabled version of the program was released using Shockwave technology. This version allows experiments to be administered remotely via an internet connection. Participant results are automatically transmitted back to the licence holder via FTP, enabling centralised data collection while supporting distributed testing environments.

Ease of Use and Language Adaptation

The program is designed for straightforward implementation in both laboratory and educational settings. The Classic Stroop Test can be launched immediately without additional preparation. The Emotional and Pictorial versions require only the creation of word lists or image filename references prior to execution. The content-driven structure of the software makes it easy to adapt the program for use in languages other than English by modifying the stimulus files.

Licensing and Access

Full functionality of the Multiple Mode Stroop Test requires the purchase of a licence key. Licensing options include individual user registration and institutional licences that allow access across an organisation, such as a university department. Licence keys are issued within twenty-four hours of purchase, enabling unrestricted use of all program features.
